Living in the North End of Peace River

The North End is one of Peace River's most established residential neighbourhoods, known for its schools, recreation facilities, parks and convenient access to the Peace River. It is also one of the most accessible neighbourhoods for the shops and businesses downtown.

With a variety of housing options, quiet residential streets and many of the community's most frequently used sports facilities, the North End offers a practical location for residents who appreciate having schools and recreation close to home.

From the walking trails along the river to the Baytex Energy Centre, Peace Regional Pool and neighbourhood parks, there's plenty to explore in this part of town

Homes in Peace River's North End

Much of the North End was developed between the 1960s and 1980s, with bungalows, bi-levels and split-level homes making up a large portion of the neighbourhood.

Many properties feature established yards, mature trees and traditional floor plans. The northern portion includes several quiet cul-de-sacs, while other streets provide convenient access to schools, parks and recreation facilities.

Newer residential development can be found toward the north end of 99 Street and in the area locally known as Norglen, around 100 Street, 99A Street and 72 Avenue. Norglen is particularly well located for access to schools, the Baytex Energy Centre, Peace Regional Pool and the North End off-leash dog park.

Another part of the North End is the residential area along 102 Street, near Peace River High School. This area includes Cool Springs Trailer Park, detached homes and row housing, providing additional housing options within the neighbourhood.

Throughout the North End, buyers will find differences in lot sizes, garage configurations, basement  development and renovations. Homes here generally offer more moderately priced options than many larger custom-built properties in Saddleback Ridge, although values vary according to each property's age, size, condition, location and features.

Schools in the North End

One of the North End's most significant advantages is its concentration of Peace River's main public, Catholic and Francophone schools. These include École Springfield Elementary School, T.A. Norris Middle School, Peace River High School, Good Shepherd School, Glenmary School and École des Quatre-Vents.

Having the town's schools concentrated in one area is particularly convenient for households managing school schedules, extracurricular activities and transportation. Families should confirm current programming, attendance eligibility and transportation arrangements with the appropriate school authority.

Baytex Energy Centre: A Hub for Sports and Recreation

The Baytex Energy Centre is one of Peace River's major recreation facilities. Located at 9810 73 Avenue, it includes an NHL-sized indoor ice surface measuring 85 by 200 feet, with spectator seating for approximately 900 people.

The arena hosts hockey, figure skating, speed skating, ringette and other ice activities. The adjoining field house has three indoor courts
accommodating sports such as basketball, volleyball, badminton, pickleball and indoor soccer. An elevated
walking and running track surrounds the field house.

The centre also offers drop-in programming, Champion's Health and Fitness, an indoor children's playground, rental spaces and the Peace Region Family Resource Network. A seasonal outdoor natural ice rink adds another option when conditions permit.

Peace Regional Pool

Located beside the Baytex Energy Centre at 7201 98 Street, Peace Regional Pool is another popular North End facility. The indoor aquatic centre features a six-lane, 25-metre pool, a diving board, rope swing, steam room and whirlpool.

Programming includes swimming lessons, swim club activities, lane swimming, aqua fitness, and public and family swim times. The facility also offers group rental opportunities. Having the pool and Baytex Energy Centre

The North End Dyke Walking Trail

One of the North End's most recognizable outdoor features is the paved walking trail along the Peace River dyke. Extending approximately 2.7 kilometres in the North End, the trail runs parallel to the river and connects with neighbourhood sidewalks. In total, the 8 km dyke trail connects the North End to downtown and the South End. A pedestrian bridge along the North End section spans the river, providing walking and cycling access to the West Hill.

Access points include connections near the end of 99A Street, 77 Avenue and 84 Avenue. Some entry points are more suitable for bicycles, strollers and mobility devices than others.

During warmer months, the dyke is frequently used for walking, jogging, cycling and dog walking. It also hosts
community fitness activities and occasional races. The Town maintains the paved trail during winter, although
temperatures and conditions affect its use.

North End Boat Launch

A public boat launch off 84 Avenue provides access to the Peace River. The gravel launch includes parking and
is maintained by the Peace River Boating Association. Together with the nearby dyke trail, the boat launch
makes the river an important part of the North End's recreational setting.

Parks, Playgrounds and Green Spaces

Kinsmen Park is one of the area's best-known parks, offering playgrounds, a ball diamond, sand volleyball courts, picnic tables, benches and open green space.

Spruce Court Playground is a smaller park near 98 Street and 79 Avenue, with pathway connections from surrounding streets. Another playground is located near 98A Street, also reached by walking paths.

Sports fields near Glenmary School are used for activities such as soccer. A nearby running track offers an outdoor exercise option when public access is permitted. The North End Off-Leash Dog Park on 99 Street near Peace River Cemetery provides dedicated space for dogs.

River Road and Homes Near Green Space

Locally, portions of 94 Street and 96 Street are known as River Road. These connected streets run alongside the dyke, with some properties facing the river corridor.

Other areas, including parts of Norglen and the Aspen Grove row housing development on 98 Street, feature
properties that back onto green space. Lot boundaries, views and access vary by property and should be reviewed individually.

Shopping, Childcare and Community Services

Most major retail shopping is downtown or on the West Hill, but the North End has several neighbourhood businesses. Reddi Mart on 77 Avenue provides convenience-store shopping, with Matt's Pizza and Grill nearby.

North Peace Gymnastics Club, at 9806 77 Avenue in the Mercer Peace River Endurance Centre, offers gymnastics and youth programming, including after-school activities and camps.

Childcare options in the area include Sugar Plum Daycare and Preschool, Peace River Early Learning Childcare and OSC, and French-language early childhood programming through Centre de la Petite Enfance Quatre-Vents.

Churches, community organizations, the Peace River RCMP detachment, Northland School Division offices and the Salvation Army are also located in the North End. The neighbourhood's strength is its concentration of education, recreation, childcare and community services rather than major retail.

What Makes the North End Different?

The North End's greatest advantage is the concentration of schools, sports facilities and recreation
opportunities. School activities, swimming lessons, hockey practices, gymnastics, soccer games, playground visits and walks along the dyke can all be part of daily life here.

It offers a variety of established homes, newer construction in areas such as Norglen, and other housing choices near 102 Street. With quiet cul-de-sacs, mature trees, parks and access to the Peace River, the neighbourhood combines established residential living with extensive community amenities.
